Countdown to EU Battery Regulation Labeling|How Should Businesses Prepare?

2026-01-29

On December 15, 2025, the European Commission released the draft implementing act detailing the specific labeling requirements mandated by Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. The public comment period is currently open and will run through January 12, 2026 (Brussels time).

Draft Content Overview
This implementing draft establishes unified and granular standards for battery labels, covering:

  • Design, dimensions, and placement of labels;
  • Specific labeling for non-rechargeable batteries;
  • Marking of restricted and hazardous substances;
  • Priority and hierarchy of various marking and labeling elements.
  • Language accessibility and user readability;
  • Carbon footprint labeling specifications.

Labeling Requirement 1:
Using portable rechargeable, SLI, and LMT batteries as examples, the design specifications are illustrated below. These clearly define mandatory data fields, element positioning, symbol dimensions, typography (font size/style), and required clearance distances.

Label Requirement 2:
The regulation also specifies the format for carbon footprint labels:(I)Reference to the delegated act for carbon footprint performance classes; (II) The battery’s performance class; (III) & (IV) The numerical value and its functional unit.

Standardized Electrochemical Chemistry Nomenclature:
The act formalizes the naming conventions for electrochemical compositions. For rechargeable batteries, the designated markings are:
  1. Lead-acid batteries :“Pb”
  2. Nickel-Cadmium batteries: "Ni-Cd"
  3. NMC Lithium-ion batteries:“Li-ion NMC”
  4. LFP Lithium-ion batteries: "Li-ion LFP"
  5. LMO Lithium-ion batteries: "Li-ion LMO”
  6. LCO Lithium-ion batteries: "Li-ion LCO"
  7. NCA Lithium-ion batteries: "Li-ion NCA"
  8. Lithium Metal batteries: "Li-metal"
  9. Sodium-ion batteries: "Na-ion"

MCM Reminder:
This implementing act will take effect 20 days after its official publication and will become mandatory 18 months thereafter. All batteries placed on the market or put into service must satisfy these requirements; non-compliant products will face restricted market access under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.
